Sony to drop Linux support for PS3

Any owners of a Playstation 3 will be prevented from being able to use the “install other OS” option following the latest firmware update for the console this week.

The new update is due to arrive on Thursday 1st April, but Sony bosses have said (via the PS Europe Blog) that this is not an elaborate hoax or an April Fools Day joke!

Sony says the move is due to nebulous “security concerns”, although we’re not convinced that all PS3 owners who have been running Linux quite happily, and for some time now on their consoles, will be pleased with the decision.

There is always the option to disregard the updates of course, but that means that you won’t be able to access the PlayStation Network or play games on-line.
